PT. 4 Brown Butter Poetry & Vibe Open Mic

Brown Butter Poetry & Vibe Open Mic

On October 21st, I hosted the fourth series of Brown Butter Poetry & Vibe open mic presented by Vow to Self at Daily Press in BK. And this night was certainly a VIBE.

The open mic list always starts with one or two names, and as the night goes on, the whole sheet becomes filled. One thing is clear: people are inspired when others share on the mic. It’s almost like a trickle effect, a spark that lights up someone else’s creativity and yearn to release that expression. Brown Butter Poetry & Vibe is the outlet, and I’m just happy to be a part of a platform that brings individuals together in creativity, vulnerability and community.

We had so many musicians play this time around and the open mic pretty much turned into a jam session. I shared a new poem and also screened my newest poetry film, ‘Shades,’ on the projector. I had my Shades playlist on Spotify to set the vibes throughout the night, which people seemed to really dig! I update it weekly, so feel free to add it.

Our feature, Thiahera Nurse, brightened up the room with her aura and incessant cheering of fellow artists that hopped on the open mic. Thiahera is a poet, teacher and author of chapbook, Some Girls Survive on Their Sorcery Alone. Her poetry was honest, vulnerable, cultural, everything Queens and queenly. She shared her personal relationship with mental health and her gratitude for being where she is in life today.

I appreciate everyone who came through! Honestly, this space has become more than I imagined it to be. I’m grateful people continue to come and choose to express their he(arts) in front of an audience. And happy that strangers turn into new friends and connections.

If you ever want to be a feature for Brown Butter Poetry & Vibe, send me a note with links to your work.

There won’t be a BBPV this month since I’m traveling for my Brown Butter Book Tour in Boston then Europe! Hope you got your signed copy. Definitely save the date for our end of year banger on December 16th. ☺️
