'SHADES' - Poetry Film + Single

‘Shades’ is a poem that celebrates women of color of all tones coming together in sisterhood, joy + sustainability.

A syllabic poem from my debut book, Brown Butter, ‘Shades’ rides the rhythm just as smooth as does its truth. It exudes a sultry feeling with a vinyl vibe through different hues of brown, empowering women of color that their skin is beautiful, divine and smooth, like butter.

The film is shot + directed by Timothy Smith in creative collaboration with Dominique Drakeford of Sustainable Brooklyn, everyone in the film is wearing a thrifted wardrobe to reflect sustainability. 

The poem is paired with piano melodies and a finger-snapping beat produced by Franky Payne.
