PT. 7 Brown Butter Poetry & Vibe Open Mic
Our 7th Brown Butter Poetry & Vibe had an energy like no other. In hindsight, it was the perfect vibe before the storm, that is Rona. We all came together in high sprits ready to express, listen, relax and be amongst love. We gathered at Hip Hop Closet in Brooklyn on February 27th, a curated event presented by Vow to Self.
First time greeters turned family, that’s how each open mic feels. As people trickle in from different walks of life, the atmosphere becomes communal and charged with anticipation for inspiration. The sign up sheet fills up organically. As do the benches, chairs and good energy.
This was my first time hosting at and partnering with Hip Hop Closet, a black-family-owned store in Brooklyn that focuses on streetwear and Hip Hop culture. It’s been around for over 22 years! I originally discovered this unique establishment, adorned with a pool table, couches, jewelry, puffy and faux fur jackets, Hip Hop art collages and Brooklyn-stamped merch, when I performed there in January for Sofar Sounds.
Spoken word poetry, original rap songs and acapella melodies flowed from first-timers and regulars. I performed my newest single, AIR, that’s now available on all music streaming outlets. With the combination of a supportive crowd and an enigmatic lineup of performers, genuine connections were made and felt.
Our feature was London McKoy, a singer-songwriter and DJ, whose sound is a fusion of R&B, Jazz, Soul and Hip-Hop. McKoy soothed us into familiar tunes like Usher’s You Ain’t Gotta Call and original new music, Sometimes, as her dedicated entourage sang in harmony. We were all in awe of her effortless falsettos and melodies.
Thank you to everyone who came and added to the vibe! You being there means more than you know. It’s truly a blessing to create spaces for us to express. More events are coming soon, so make sure you sign up for our newsletter below. ❤️
Special thanks to our photographer, Expression Jhones, you can look through the gallery to see glimpses of the night. Hope to see you at the next Brown Butter Poetry & Vibe!
Until then, stay healthy, stay conscious, stay light.
